Issue #3
Welcome to Word-less Wednesday, a weekly feature of Good and Beautiful Things. (Almost) every Wednesday, I’ll share a piece of art that I’ve made along with a brief explanation of what inspired it. Occasionally, I’ll also share short essays on the creative life.
A Reader Update:
I’m so thankful for your support of both my writing and my art. It’s important to me that I don’t flood your inbox with more emails than you’d prefer to receive.
As of next week, this Wednesday Art edition will be an optional (free) subscription, separate from the main newsletter. You will be able to continue getting both newsletters or choose the one you’re more interested in. Look for that option next week.
Thanks for being here!
Celebrating Summer Days
Earlier this summer, I snapped this quick photo of two boys playing in the the field near a playground. The image brought back memories of my kids when they were much younger, when the treasure of a summer day was an open field with a friend along for the adventure. I took the photo so I could use it as a reference later.
I wasn’t satisfied when I first tried to recreate the scene but I didn’t close the sketchbook (or throw it as I might have done in the past) and walk away. I cut out the tree and put it on a fresh page of my sketchbook and kept working. It turned into a collage and I actually really like what I ended up with.
There’s almost always a moment like this in any creative process, whether I’m writing an essay or making something with my hands. A scary in-between moment when I can’t tell whether the process will end with '‘success'‘1. But if I trust myself and press on, I’ll (almost) always find a way to the other side and end up with something that holds the truth I was looking to capture.

Sometimes “success” means continuing to work on the thing even if I never end up liking the end product.
