Yay! You could always start small...I carry my sketchbook and a few pens and the water brush to church most Sundays so I can draw from a photo during the service (it helps with my restlessness). Some of my kids bring sketchbooks too.
I think I prep for a trip more like your husband. :-)
I do always pack with my coffee consumption in mind - what will I need for wherever I am going to keep the coffee iv flowing, but other than that....I pack light, forget stuff, and figure it out from there. I do usually bring a book I won't read because, as you well say, "I want to bring along important parts of myself even if they never leave the suitcase."
Such a great post tracing through so many good and beautiful things. Thank you for it all!
Thanks, friend. And yes you do sound like Matt. Nothing on his list but coffee. On this trip I saw him drink airplane coffee (bad), overly sweet coffee (he likes unsweetened) and cappuccinos every morning (good).
We traveled across country last week. I brought paper, some of my favorite soil watercolors, and a travel canvas thingy that rolls up and holds brushes, pencils, and pens. I was so so glad I brought it, even though I often run out of time and use reference pictures later. When I did paint, it felt like I was doing a little thing for me!
I was gifted a box from The Art of Soil this Christmas. I love the natural pigments! And I think it’s really cool to be able to paint nature with a little bit of nature!
I'm late replying, but you won't be surprised to hear I pack like your husband. I bring clothes I can re-wear and try to never bring more than two pairs of shoes. My non negotiable item is my Kindle so I can read on the plane, before bed, etc. For several recent trips, I've brought along a tiny notebook (palm sized or so) and washi tape. In the evenings, I recap the day so I'll be able to look back and remember details that are lost over time. So glad you shared this post and your beautiful pictures!
This is so insightful and helpful! I look forward to eventually feeling adept enough to travel with my art supplies!

Yes! I love this, Kendra. And now I'm off to go look up soil watercolors, I'm not familiar with them. What do you love about them?
