I’m also a pantser in my creative life and plotter in every other area! I’ve tried to do editorial calendars and outlines for posts, but those methods just don’t seem to work for me. Too constricting. I usually have little clue about what I’ll write. At this point, I let my posts turn into whatever they want to be!

Also, I’m with you on the getting outside in nature. Fall is so fleeting, but beautiful, and I don’t want to miss it. 🍂

I experience the same thing when it comes to writing posts, Erica.

Yes to Fall! Nashville is currently confused by our high 70's in November.

I call myself a plantser. I usually write essays by the seat of my pants, but when putting them into a larger piece of work (i.e. the Lenten Devotional I wrote and the Empty Nest book I’m working on), I plot things out. I love seeing things fall into some kind of order and sometimes I have to create that order first. Idk if that makes sense or not. 🤷‍♀️

And yes, to needing more time in nature. I like your non-shaming approach and need to use that on myself! Thanks for sharing.

Panster here, too. I have found that my body yearns for playfulness and experimenting with all art. It has truly been one of the best prescriptions for healing and an outlet while living in the hard. Also, I just don’t have a lot of time so planning and plotting takes time which takes away from creating. Haha. And I totally agree with you about being out in nature more. I believe our bodies know what they need and when we listen to them and give them what they need we feel less of that inner tension and turmoil and for me, how I’m spending my time but I also discovered that the ebbs and flows of time out and time in the art studio are perfectly normal and necessary, too. So I have stopped being so hard on myself in that way.

Your birds are delightful. Thank you for sharing them. Is this space the only place you are doing that? And I had never heard of this artist you mention with the free workshop and I checked him out. I love his fun work. Thanks for sharing! ❤️

Agree with all of this, Kelly. In most areas of my life it's been an invitation and a sign of healing to move more toward pants-ing than plotting.

And I love what you said here "I believe our bodies know what they need and when we listen to them and give them what they need we feel less of that inner tension and turmoil". That's what the call to move and be outside feels like for me, not a "should".

Thank you about the birds! Currently Substack is the only place I share art. I dream of an ETSY store but I need to strengthen the plotter side to pull it off! I learned about Lewis Rossignol by taking several classes with him through this website. https://www.carlasonheim.com/online-classes/urban-sketchbooking/

Yes I think a planter makes sense with writing beyond a personal essay. I remember that Sepetys (the pantser) made a comment about her surprise at how much she could get done when they made an outline.

I learned this past week that I actually tore a ligament in my hand in a car accident a month ago. No bike riding or kayaking for me this season. 😢 I hope you find some good opportunities to get outside!
