If you want more of that "empathetic presence", let me commend the Vizsla to you. They are down for snuggles and naps, and up for a walk or a hike—pretty much whatever you need. My Scout Finch is my best girl ; ) She's in my profile picture, even.

We have always had dogs (cats are for the barn, only). Several years ago we lost my son's Sheepdog/Lab mix in a tragic accident and it grieved me like nothing ever had, up to that time in my life. I was confused and embarrassed that I was grieving so hard for an animal, but the people around us understood. Even the school bus driver commented that she missed seeing her try to outrun the bus from inside our fenced pasture. And that son who loved her so much is getting a new puppy in about a month, after all these years, and it feels *almost* as exciting as our grand babies that are on the way! I guess that means I am a certified Dog Person.

I really wanted to see your wedding pictures with all the animals present, but I can't wait to see pictures of your dog ; )

This is so cute! I’m loving your daughter's Christmas ornaments — she’s quite the the artist. We talked about pets within the first month of being together, my partner and I. Turns out, I was a dog person, and didn’t like cats, and he was the opposite. Fast forward, we both love them now. But it was his parents’ cat, Smudgie, who, though no longer with us, was genuinely the sweetest cat in the world. So I say never say never.
