Word-less Wednesday Bonus: The Making of My First 'Zine
Issue #6.5/ Welcome to Creative Possibilities, a new section of my Good and Beautiful Things newsletter.
Creative Possibilities will include my Word-less Wednesday posts along with inspiration for your own creative journey.
In this week’s Word-less Wednesday post, I shared my latest project: my first ever ‘zine. Take a look at how I made it.
The credit for this entire process goes to my art teacher, Carla Sonheim. The style of art is my own.
Step 1: Writing Prompt
Carla guided us through two sessions of writing (six minutes each), giving us a few questions to consider as prompts. I chose my own:
Why do I enjoy my bike rides?
After the first writing prompt, we did six more minutes but she had us write in boxes, like a comic strip. You could change the writing theme or stick with it. I stuck with it.
Step 2: Editing
Next I narrowed down my words to make them fit on eight panels.
Step 3: Preparing the Panels
Then I cut down some card stock into eight panels (we did 2x3 inch panels). I made the panels from card stock that I had previously covered with paint using a Gelli plate.
Step 4: Make the Artwork
Next I created art for each panel. I used collage materials and made some little drawings with pen and paintbrush.
Step 5: Arrange Panels for Making Copies
There was an order to how we were instructed to lay them out so that it would fold correctly at the end. Our teacher used paint tape to hold hers in place on a piece of paper, I used sticky tac.
Step 6: Photocopy
Then I made photocopies with a color copier onto regular copier paper. (I learned that my local library offers colored prints for 25 cents a piece!)
Step 6: Trim down and fold
Done!

What a great prompt idea! I love seeing the process of making Zen. Now I want to try it... it looks like too much fun not to give it a go!
